Vietnam Currency: The Official Currency of Vietnam is Vietnamese Dong, which you will see after an amount like “Đ”, D” or “VND”. You have coins (not popular anymore) and paper notes for 500 vnd, 1000 vnd, 2000 vnd, 5000 vnd. Plastic notes for 10,000 vnd, 20,000 vnd, 50,000 vnd, 100,000 vnd, 200,000 vnd and biggest 500,000 vnd.

Although the official currency name is the Vietnam Dong (VND), many major stores and hotels in Vietnam also accept the US Dollar.Other curencies are not accepted in most of places. When you travel to Vietnam, it is handy if you can bring some dollars or exchange to get VND. Especially if you are planning to get a Vietnam Visa upon arrival, it will save you problems, as the visa stamp at the airport must be paid in USD. A number of other currencies are accepted here, but the rates are painful.

Credit cards are mostly accepted in the big cities at hotels, big restaurants and travel agents, but do not expect cheap guesthouses accommodations or local restaurants that accept a credit card. Payments commissions sometimes apply around 3% of total amount.

1. Which Bank ‘s ATM to Withdrall Money in Vietnam?

ATM ’s are available in every city in Vietnam. It is no problem to withdraw cash with a regular Maestro debit card or with a Visa or MasterCard credit card. However, beware of withdrawal costs (usually 25,000d to 50,000d) and withdrawal limit; most have a maximum of around 2,000,000d (75 euros); Agribank can hold up to 6,000,000d and Commonwealth Bank up to 10,000,000d. And ATM in Vietnam only give you local currency (VND).

The most popular ATMs of foreign banks in Vietnam include Citibank, ANZ, HSBC, Commonwealth Bank, Shinhan, Standard Chartered. These ATMs can only be found in big cities where there are many foreigners live and work. They usually offer higher withdrawal limits, fewer withdrawal fees, even no fee (for Citibank or ANZ cards), and other benefits. For more information, Citibank, ANZ, and HSBC are the three biggest foreign banks in the country. So that it is better to have cards issued by them.

Some ATM from big local banks including Agribank, BIDV, ACB, Vietinbank, Vietcombank, Techcombank, Sacombank have more than half of the ATM machines in the country. Agribank and Vietcombank have the best networks in the country. ATMs of these local banks are abundant in major metropolitan cities. In the smaller cities, countrysides, rural areas and remote areas, you have fewer choices because there are only ATMs from local banks. The withdrawal limits and fees of local and foreign ATMs will be clarified later.
