History of Phu Bai International Airport in Hue:
- French colonial period:
Phu Bai International Airport was built during the French colonial period, the French built this airport to serve the imperial city of Hue. It was repaired and upgraded many times such as extending the runway to receive large aircraft; system of taxiways, parking lots, drainage systems, navigation lights.
- The time of the Republic of Vietnam:
In the form of an airport, Phu Bai was built, embellished and developed for the civil and military aviation needs of the Republic of Vietnam Air Force. At this time, the official name of Phu Bai airport is Phi Cang Hue - Phu Bai, also known as Phu Bai Airport.
- After Reunification 1975:
Phu Bai Airport started welcoming international flights in 2005, of Austrian Airlines (Austrian Airlines) flights by aircraft B737 carrying passengers to and from the ancient capital of Luang Prabang (LPQ).
Passenger Terminal T2 for Domestic Departure:
Terminal T2 of Phu Bai International Airport was started in December 2019, invested by Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV), and started to put into operation from 30th April 2023. Terminal 2, high-rise with a capacity of 2 thousand passengers / peak hour, the cargo terminal area has a capacity of 100 thousand tons / year.

It is expected that by 2030, the passenger terminal will be expanded to reach a capacity of 4,000 passengers/peak hour and receive 200,000 tons of cargo/year. The total planned land area of Phu Bai Airport is over 500 hectares, Investment capital of more than 12 thousand 500 billion VND was mobilized from many different sources.
Passenger terminal T2 Phu Bai includes: station, roads, car park and ancillary items. Total capital is about 2,250 billion VND, invested by Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV). The work is designed according to Hue royal architectural culture with layers of roofs stacked on top of each other, expressing the desire to rise.
The first floor includes: arrival hall, baggage carousel, immigration area, port authority, customs, VIP lounge, lost luggage room, security control. The mezzanine floor has offices for airlines. The second floor is the check-in area, security control, exit area, waiting area for boarding. The terminal has a flight path system with 4 telescopic tubes.
The terminal has a construction floor area of about 22,380 m2, expected to serve 5 million passengers/year (4 million domestic passengers) in 2021 and 9 million passengers/year in 2030, ensuring service 2,500 rush hour passengers. The project officially started on December 29, 2019 and will be put into operation in the fourth quarter of 2021.
Public Transportation in Phu Bai International Airport:
Distance Hue City Center to/from Phu Bai International Airport is 15km, and usually take about 25 minutes to 30 minutes by car. Public Bus is one of the main transportation that is used by locals to travel Phu Bai Airport to/from Hue City center. Buses are mostly suitable for solo travelers with fewer belongings as they tend to get crowded.
City’s bus network has been expanded and now covers most of Hue City so tourists can easily take a bus from Phu Bai Airport to Hue City center or vice versa, as well as to travel within the city center. Currently, there are 2 public bus routes that can be used for getting from Hue Airport into the city center.
