Danang Chicken Church: Unique Cathedral in Da Nang City

Chicken Church is also known by other names such as the Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, Tourane Church, or Da Nang Cathedral. This church is located on the busy Tran Phu street in the center of Da Nang city.
History of the Chicken Church in Da Nang:
Priests Baudet, Marquette and Fuciti were sent to take charge of the parishioners at the Han Gate until February 3, 1665, by order of Lord Hien they had to leave Vietnam.
According to Father Rival's report sent to the Paris Mission Society (MEP), in 1700, on Palm Day, Cua Han Church was ransacked by the Nguyen Lords and in 1741 the Cua Han Congregation had 80 parishioners.
And Father Halbout's report to the MEP: by July 1775, the Congregation of Cua Han was completely annihilated by the Tay Son army. And from 1775-1885 Cua Han Congregation did not have a name in the history of the Church in Vietnam.
After the Van Than movement broke up in 1885, many parishioners came to live in Cua Han. These parishes are cared for by Father Maillard, pastor of Phu Thuong parish and a parish belonging to Phu Thuong parish.
History books do not leave any official parish established date, only know that Father Laurent (Co Chinh) served the parish from 1887-1904, and since then there have always been priests in charge of the parish. land.
Da Nang Parish Church – The current Da Nang Cathedral was built between February 1923 and September 1924. On September 14, 1924, Bishop Grangeon (Man), local bishop Diocese of Qui Nhon and Bishop Allys (Diocese of Hue) bless the church. Church title: Sacred Heart of Jesus.
On January 18, 1963, the diocese was established; Bishop Peter Maria, Bishop of Qui Nhon was appointed as the first bishop of Da Nang diocese and on May 1, 1963, he officially received the diocese and Da Nang church was honored as the Cathedral. Diocese of Da Nang.
Architecture of Da Nang Chicken Church:
The church has Gothic architecture style with soaring lines, oval arches. Inside the church there are pictures and icons illustrating biblical events according to the motifs of Western churches. On the roof of the church, at the location of the lightning rod, there is a statue of a gray chicken made of alloy used as an object to determine the direction of the wind. Therefore, this church is also known as the Chicken Church.
- Gothic style architecture:
Gothic is a popular style in Europe for building castles and churches. The Chicken Church has the most typical features of Gothic architecture, which are round doors, soaring lines, cross-shaped surfaces and domes, pointed ends. Con Ga Church has a dome up to 70 m high.
Inside are statues of God, glass windows and illustrations from the Bible. The space is simple but feels extremely dignified. All are decorated according to the Christian churches in the West.

Visitors to Con Ga church are definitely impressed with the gray chicken lying on the Cross placed on top of the church. The chicken is made of alloy so it is quite light, the outside is an extremely beautiful coating.
The chicken symbol is located on the overhead lightning rod, so it should be designed to rotate in the direction of the wind to avoid breaking. Therefore, the chicken is used as an object to determine the direction of the wind. The meaning of the chicken on the roof of the church is also very special. According to the Bible, the chicken is a symbol of awakening and repentance.
- Our Lady's Grotto:
The Grotto of Our Lady is located at the back of the Chicken Church. The stone cave was built based on the prototype of the Lourdes cave of France. The Grotto of Our Lady has a peaceful, quiet and very sacred beauty.
The Grotto of Our Lady simulated the Lourdes Grotto (in France) was built in and inaugurated on February 11, 1940, during the time of priest Santuaire (Co Binh).
