Thung Nham Bird Valley in Binh Binh: All You Need to Know
Thung Nham Bird Valley is located in the famous Thung Nham Ecotourism Park in Ninh Binh Province of Vietnam. This is a nature reserve that still keeps the pristine, wild beauty, tropical forests, immense rivers to be a good palace for many rare and precious birds. Thung Nham is also the largest natural bird park in the Northern Vietnam.

Bird Watch in Thung Nham Bird Park
Thung Nham Bird Park is an eco-tourism area, located about 12 km east of Ninh Binh city center, in the core area of Trang An landscape complex, next to the famous tourist area Tam Coc – Bich Dong. From Bich Dong Pagoda, drive about 4 km on road, Thung Nham is the contiguous place between Hoa Lu district and Gia Vien, Nho Quan and Tam Diep city districts, all in Ninh Binh province.

Thung Nham is located in Hoa Lu private forest with limestone sandstone which is created in the middle of the relatively flat coastal plain in the north of Vietnam. This outcrop of limestone is interspersed with a series of regularly watered creeks and seasonally flooded valleys. The absolute elevation of the region is from 10 to 281 m.
The Bird Garden of Thung Nham eco-tourism area is home to a variety of birds. From rare birds (Hang Hac, Phuong Hoang) to birds such as storks, cauldrons, scallops, fire warblers,… Thung Nham Bird Park is home to 50,000 different birds belonging to more than 40 species such as teal, flamingo, warbler… Even the sight of birds flying in the blue sky is a daily scene but will definitely make visitors feel impressed at the first sight.
Thung Nham Bird Park spreads over an area of more than 300 hectares, is a residence of about 40.000 birds,5.000 bird nests of all kinds which belong to 46 species of birds. In which, there are many bird species recorded in Vietnam’s Red Book… Thung Nham bird park is also home for 109 species of plants, 150 species of animals including 58 species. fish, 7 species of amphibians, 10 species of mammals… are in urgent need of conservation and development.
Especially at Thung Nham Bird Park, you can also explore the wildlife of nearly 40 species of birds with about 50,000 birds. Especially when every sunset, when the birds return, you will feel the wonderful pristine beauty that is hard to find out anywhere else. Sitting on the boat down the gentle water, listening to the sound and watching the flocks of white storks, birds, … will be a great experience.
Thung Nham Bird Park is located in the middle of the Tien Lake, with an area of about 18 hectares. The lake here is very poetic and blue in 4 seasons, visitors can take a walk and enjoy the scenery around the lake.
What is the Best time to Visit Thung Nham Bird Valley?
You can visit Thung Nham Ninh Binh almost any time of the year. But we recommend to go here in the autumn time of the year (from September to November every year), that will be better because of the beautiful weather and little rain. During this time, the space will be beautiful with hundreds of birds flocking to the nest before dark or going to feed throughout the day. The climate at this time is also very beautiful, it is not yet winter so it is still cool and sunny. You can go sightseeing as well as enjoy the fresh air in Thung Nham Bird Park and freely participate in other activities on the premises.
Best Things to Do & Places to Visit in Thung Nham Bird Park?
- Motorbike, Cycling and Boat Tour: Thung Nham is close to Tam Coc. Here you can go to the Tam Coc boat tour (7 km), the Bich Dong Pagoda (4.5 km) and the famous viewpoint of Mua Cave (12 km). You can easily use a bicycle to bike between these places.
- Vai Gioi Cave: The cave is located deep in the mountain so you have to climb more than 400 stone steps to reach it. Inside Vai Gioi cave, there are stalactites with all kinds of mysterious shapes. In the past, this place used to set up a bridge to pray for favorable rainy weather.
- But Cave: With a length of more than 500 meters but cave is the largest attraction in this complex. The meaning of this name comes from a statue of Buddha sitting by the river as a spiritual symbol that brings peace to people in the region as well as tourists from all over the world coming here.
- Banyan Tree: it has been recorded all 3 times this Banyan Tree moved around the ancient temple in Thung Nham forest
- Mermaid Cave: This cave is more than 1.5km long with many stalactites of all different shapes and stories about the mermaid stranded and petrified in the cave.
- Aquarium Cave: the name says the most impressive point of the cave, that is, inside the cave, there are enough stalactites shaped like a magnificent and sophisticated underwater palace.
- Valley of Love: is a sightseeing place elaborately built by many flowers and ornamental plants creating a wonderfully romantic scene in the middle of Thung Nham forest.
